I did not know the mistborn series was two trilogies. I was expecting many more pages of Elend and Vin. I wasn't ready. My poor heart. That is all.

2021.12.07 18:38 Slasherly I developed severe visual snow after being given a common dilation eye drop. Never ever take this drop.

Cyclopens or Cyclopentolate. They gave me this eye drop after I had pain in my left eye to relax the muscles inside. I was told the effect can last upto 10 days. Here I am months later the doctor says your pupil is back to normal and I also passed the E test and the initial pain is also gone. However, now I am left with severe static across BOTH my eyes encompassing my entire visual field. Never take this drop guys. Don't know what I'm going to do now.

Let's say they make another Oko tier broken card. Would they most likely just leave it as is in Standard and then fix it for Alchemy? Or would they ban it and issue wildcards like usual?

2021.12.07 18:38 bigironkey What is it to be “anti-work”?

I personally think the term “anti-work” might be a misnomer. I can’t speak for everyone, but it seems to me that some degree of work is inherent to the process of living, just like hygiene or the upkeep of one’s dwelling. That’s not what I’m against. What I am against is what “work” has come to mean in a sociological context—that’s no good.
“Work” has become integrally linked with status, and since we’re social animals, we associate status with value. Instead of simply meeting needs, “work” has come to be what life is about, as though climbing the social totem pole is some kind of obligation. It isn’t, it’s just one of the many things a person can do with their time here on Earth. The value that people attribute to it comes from a kind of social outsourcing; “if other people find something worthwhile, it is”, as though value is democratically determined. Since other people find higher-status individuals worthwhile, they feel they need to attain that themselves, or else be “worthless”; they don’t think they can determine what value is in the context of their own lives without others co-signing.
But this is like abstaining from calling a meal you’ve prepared delicious because others haven’t weighed in on it; since you’re the one eating the dish, it really only matters that you find the meal pleasing. If you never realize this, you’ll find yourself conducting your life for an imaginary audience, like you’re perpetually being appraised by a panel of judges whom you constantly have to impress, whose metrics for evaluation—productivity, power, influence—have nothing to do with what you actually hold near and dear: love, fulfillment, stimulation, authenticity.
The panel of judges applies to those who play into it—the truth is that nobody actually notices you unless you put yourself in a position to be evaluated. And even if you do that, and you do everything right, and you pass their tests with flying colors, once you step away from the limelight of their attention, any sense of gratification you received from the ordeal feels superficial; you can’t put a compliment or look of admiration in your pocket. And so you might think you need to do it again, and again, and you might spend your life this way, pursuing a form of validation that is meaningless outside of a social context.
“At least I’m successful in my career”—in the eyes of whom? Do your friends and family actually care that you’re an esteemed professional? If so, does it feel unsettling to know they value you for the role you play, instead of who you are? If you stopped playing that role for whatever reason, would they still value you? No? Some friends you’ve got there. Yes? So the role isn’t what’s important to them after all. So whose positive social regard are you trying to win over with your career—the opinions of strangers? Some life you’ve got there.
So it makes sense that if you’re 20, 30, 40 years into this cycle, and someone suggests that the whole thing is a farce—that they can be the author of their own validation, without the need to commodify their efforts to an audience of strangers—you might take that as an affront to everything you’ve invested; who is this person to suggest they have value? On what grounds? They haven’t even gone before the panel—how dare they devalue its regard by minting their own validation. But their currency of validation only has value if you accept their metrics.
And what are those metrics worth, really? What’s the value of status? Why is it worthwhile to be productive? If the things you’ve produced are in some way useful, or bring light into someone’s life, or the process of producing it fulfills you, that’s one thing—then it’s not the productivity that’s valued, it’s what the productivity does that you value. But being productive for its own sake, like it’s somehow virtuous in itself, as though not being productive is a failure or wrongdoing? That’s like saying humming is better than silence.
“At least I’m doing something!” Is it really that, or is it that you find silence unnerving—perhaps because you can’t bear what it brings: being alone with your thoughts. And so, rather than feeling powerless, you busy yourself, make noise for its own sake, and react with knee-jerk contempt when someone values peace, stillness, or contemplation—of course you condemn them, they’re valuing the very thing you’re spending your life running from.
If you really talk with pathologically-successful people, you’ll often find this to be the case: for whatever reason, they’re convinced they’re sharks—they must keep swimming or they’ll sink—and if they sink, the weight of the depths will crush them. But for those of us who aren’t afraid of silence, we understand that the alternative of swimming isn’t sinking, it’s floating, and that’s just fine.
But we can’t do that! Even though we can float, we currently find ourselves in rough seas with waves that dunk our heads and choke our lungs with salty water! And the sharks are going, “See, look! That’s what you get for not perpetually swimming.” But the water is choppy because of the frenetic activity below the surface; their swimming is churning up the waves we’re choking on!
If we all just took stillness as the default, and learned to dive only when we needed to—for food or whatever—we’d be able to keep the surface placid, and most people would neither drown nor starve—floating expends far less energy and exhausts no one. But instead, we have to gasp for breath with hollow guts as we furiously swim against a frothing whirlpool whipped up by the monstrously powerful apex predators below. And if we fail, we’re invariably sucked down the vortex, and the beasts down there swallow us whole, and the nourishment from our corpses contributes to their hideous size and power. And so they go on writhing down there, violently, untouchable, ruining things for everyone.
That, in my opinion, is what anti-work is really about: perspective.
